Feb 2025 The Novato Police K9 Program 501(c)(3) was established in March 2024.

MISSION: to partner with the Novato Police Department for the acquisition of canines, to assist in their healthcare needs, to provide support for their training and to foster good relations between the Police Department and the community.

PROTECTING OUR PROTECTORS
The Novato Police Department has a limited budget allocated to the K9 program, which covers dog + handler training, as well as standard health insurance for the K9. However, other expenses that arise, such as ongoing medical care for retired K9s and the expense incurred by the adopting officer upon his/her K9 retirement are not covered in the Novato Police Department budget.

However, with your help, during our first year of K9 fundraising, the Foundation has secured the funding necessary to acquire one Dutch Shephard, similar to a Belgian Malinois. The cost of the dog is between $16-$20K, an expense the Foundation incurs, and then sells the dog to the NPD for $1. By selling the dog to the NPD, the Foundation limits its liability and the Novato Police

Department has complete ownership of this highly skilled team member. We recently just retired “Rookie” and are welcoming “Koda” to the team as our new “weapons” dog. His partner is Officer Allen Solana. “Koda” was named in a city-wide contest by a Fourth Grade Class at Pleasant Valley Elementary School. We are still raising money to buy the City a Drug Dog next year.

HOW YOU CAN HELP
Through community and individual donor support of the Novato Police K9 Foundation, NPD can continue to responsibly utilize police canines and ensure they receive the care they need.
