Our Commitment
K9 Acquisition
We raise funds through public events with our local partners and sell swag and dog treats in our booths.
Community Outreach
We strive to educate the community about increased protection these dogs offer to officers, the public and even to suspects.
Retired Care
We provide insurance for retired K9 health + well-being now in the care of our police officer/steward.
K-9 Duties
Initial Impact
The Novato Police Department has a limited budget allocated to the K9 program, which covers dog + handler training, as well as standard health insurance for the K9. However, other expenses that arise, such as ongoing medical care for retired K9s and the expense incurred by the adopting officer upon his/her K9 retirement are not covered in the Novato Police Department budget.
However, with your help, during our first year of K9 fundraising, the Foundation has secured the funding necessary to acquire one Dutch Shephard, similar to a Belgian Malinois. The cost of the dog is between $16-$20K, an expense the Foundation incurs before then sell the dog to the NPD for $1. By selling the dog to the NPD, the Foundation limits its liability and the Novato Police Department has complete ownership of this highly skilled team member.
Through community and individual donor support of the Novato Police K9 Foundation, NPD can continue to responsibly utilize police canines and ensure they receive the care they need.

Belgian Malinois/Dutch Shepherd
Both the Belgian Malinois and the Dutch Shepherd service dogs are highly intelligent and versatile breeds known for their loyalty and trainability. They excel in roles such as search and rescue, police work, and assistance for individuals with disabilities. Their strong work ethic and protective nature make them an excellent choice for various service tasks.
These dogs are also very active and alert. They respond well to training and can pick up commands quickly. They can be relied on to complete tasks efficiently and will consistently follow their handler’s cues.
Loyalty is another strong point. Their hard-working nature makes them eager to please. They’re known for unwavering obedience as much as they are for their strength and agility.
The dogs on the Novato Police Force are protective, people-pleasing dogs who are known for being friendly and playful. They make good service dogs for individuals with children or other family members since they tend to enjoy being social when they’re not on duty.

Future Goals
The Novato Police Department will continue utilizing police K9s in situations where allowable.
The department also plans to expand the K9 program to include a dog that has the acute skill to detect firearms, explosives and other weapons. Plans also include a second dog by early 2025. This dog will be trained in drug interdiction, including cocaine, fentanyl and other opioids.
To round out our K9 Unit, the Foundation will purchase for the Novato Police Department a certified Therapy/Service dog. This dog will provide important support to our hardworking officers and department staff, and be deployed in other instances that benefit the Novato community.
The Belgian Malinois and the Dutch Shepherds are highly intelligent and trainable breeds known for their strong work ethic and loyalty. These qualities make them excellent candidates for service roles such as mobility assistance or psychiatric support, where their focus and responsiveness can provide crucial aid to individuals with specific needs.
